What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

For Berwyn, La Grange, and Elmhurst, IL, residents who need gastric bypass surgery, look no further than the surgeons at Suburban Surgical Associates/Suburban Metabolic Institute. They use the most advanced medical techniques and technologies available today.

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery is a bariatric or weight-loss surgery, and two things will happen during your surgery. Firstly, your stomach will be made smaller by dividing your stomach into two, a smaller pouch at the top and a larger part separated by staples at the bottom. The second part involves redirecting the small intestine connecting it to a small hole in the pouch part of your stomach.

There are two ways of performing a gastric bypass:

  • In open surgery, with a large surgical cut to the belly
  • Alternatively, it is done through a laparoscopy, where several small incisions are made in your belly. The laprascope (miniature camera) and tools needed for the gastric bypass are inserted through these cuts.

The team at Suburban Surgical Associates/Suburban Metabolic Institute serving Berwyn, La Grange, and Elmhurst, IL, with gastric bypass options would like you to know that the second type of gastric bypass surgery is far more common and less invasive.

What to Expect During Surgery?

A gastric bypass is a surgical procedure requiring a general anaesthetic. This means you will not be allowed to eat and drink the night before your procedure. You will also be required to stop any blood thinning or contraindicated medications for about a week before your surgery, depending on how your medical team advises you. You may also need to make changes to your diet at that time.

On the day of the procedure, you will be admitted to a local hospital and answer routine presurgical questions. When it is time for your gastric bypass, you will be moved in your bed from your room, already in your hospital gown, to the operating suite or theatre, where you will meet the surgical staff and the anaesthetist. At some stage, a drip will be put up for you.

Medical personnel will move you to the operating table, general anaesthesia will be administered, and your surgeon will perform a gastric bypass while you are asleep. Once the procedure is complete, you will move to the recovery area to wake up and stabilize. Once you have stabilized, you will be transferred back to your room.

You will remain in the hospital for approximately three to five days before being released.
