Obesity is prevalent

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report a startling health statistic: more than 42 percent of Americans are obese--that is, having a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater. That high number usually produces dangerous co-existing conditions, such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • GI issues, such as acid reflux

Additionally, people who carry too much weight often struggle with emotional problems, such as poor self-esteem and depression. If you've crossed the line into obesity, and your dieting and exercise routine repeatedly fail, Suburban Surgical Associates/Suburban Metabolic Institute can help. Our professional team helps scores of people healthily lose weight and to keep it off, minimizing the physiological and emotional impact of long-term obesity.

What you should know about gastric bypass procedures

Also known as bariatric surgeries, gastric bypass procedures are laparoscopic (small incision) surgeries that reduce the capacity of the stomach and/or small intestine. Also, they limit how many calories and nutrients the body absorbs and utilizes, gradually and safely changing body weight and shape for the better.

After a comprehensive evaluation at one of our three offices, you and your physician at Suburban Surgical Associates/Suburban Metabolic Institute will discuss your treatment options. While weight loss involves many care options, gastric bypass has helped many individuals optimize their diet and exercise routines. Together, you and your doctor will select the procedure right for you.

Types of surgeries

We offer three options, all done with small incisions and minimal recovery time. Patients who quality typically have a BMI of 40 or higher and/or are 100 pounds over ideal weight. People with BMIs of 35 or high may qualify if they also have diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or other dangerous health problems.

Our three bariatric experts offer these surgeries:

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass reduces the size and capacity of both the stomach and small intestine by forming two distinct pouches
  • An adjustable gastric band (Lap-band), the most common and reversible surgery which uses a saline-inflated balloon in the stomach to reduce how much food the stomach can hold
  • Vertical sleeve gastrectomy achieves very rapid weight loss through permanent removal of 80 percent of stomach structure

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery states that the Lap-band is the most popular surgery. However, it also has the highest incidence of weight loss reversal over time.
